Can the clamp be put around the cable to an appliance to measure the electricity useage of that appliance?

No. The clamp must go around only the live cable. If the clamp is put around a bundle of cables (such as in a power lead to an appliance) then it will not provide correct readings. It does not have to be the live cable to the meter but any live cable will provide a correct reading, so for example if you could place the clamp around a live cable to an appliance then that would work.

We would strongly recommend getting the advice of an electrician before any attempt is made to isolate live cables from cable bundles.
